2017年 明けましておめでとうございます（including English message)

明けましておめでとうございます。
本年もよろしくお願い致します。

例年元旦になると、「万葉集」の最後を飾る大伴家持が詠んだ歌で、私の大好きな次の歌を採り上げていますが、今年もこれを紹介したいと思います。この歌は、家持が天平宝字３年（７９５）の正月元旦、左遷され因幡守（鳥取県）となって迎えた賀宴において歌ったものです。

「新しき 年の初めの 初春の
　　　 今日降る雪の いやしけ吉事（よごと）」（巻20の4516）
  （新しい年の初めの初春の今日、めでたくも降る雪のように、いよいよ良いことが重なるように）という意味です。

この歌は決して明るい雰囲気の歌ではありません。都から離れて淋しく暮らす家持が何か良い転機が訪れることを期待して歌ったものと言われています。昔、正月に降る雪は、その年が、豊年になる前兆だと言われていました。

いま、世界や日本においても、予期しない、人々が望まない、多くの出来事が次から次へと起こり、かすかな不安を感じます。しかしこの歌の大伴の家持のように、希望を失わず、人類が英知を取り戻し、よりよい世の中になって欲しいと願っています。

  I wish all of you a happy, prosperous New Year for 2017.
New Year’s day is called as “Shogatsu” (正月) and the greatest day of the year in Japan.
During the first some days, the entrance of houses are decorated with “"Shimekazari(注連飾り) ". It is a twisted straw rope with fern leaves, an orange and other items of good omen. It is generally hung on doors during the New Year holidays and served as a charm against evil spirits.

And inside of houses are decorated with "Kagamimochi(鏡餅)" It is two rounds of rice cakes (餅＝mochi) with an orange on top. "Kagami(鏡)" means a mirror and Mochi(餅) means a rice cake. The rice cake is shaped like a flat round mirror and that's the reason why it is called "Kagami mochi". People drink called Toso (a kind of sake=酒）and eat Zoni soup（雑煮）.

We usually go to a nearby shrine to worship for good luck with our family. Today, I also went to shrine with my family and got lucky charm.   
I hope that the world is getting better in 2017.
